Your mind is your worst enemy. It will make you deal with things like: • Fear • Anxiety • Overthinking • Negative self-talk These are all states of consciousness we’ve experienced at different points in life. Depending on the person, they can linger longer than desired—or worse, take up permanent residency in your mind. 99% of people think their mental health struggles are normal without realising it, and so they don’t seek help or even talk about them. After all, it’s hard to talk about something you can’t see. What’s worse is that many people live their entire lives in these states, not knowing they can live a life free of suffering. The problem is: these states are normal—but they shouldn’t be. Why Your Mind Feels Like the Enemy We can thank our thinking brain for suffering. It’s served a great purpose in helping us rationalise our existence and function in the world, but we’ve overworked it. Through constant rationalisation, we’ve created a habit of thinking endlessly. Like a muscle, it gets fatigued and stops working effectively when overused. The good news? You can turn your mind into your greatest ally. Here’s How Your Mind Traps You • Fear: It traps you in the future, making you constantly afraid of something bad happening. • Anxiety: It stops you from experiencing the moment, as you battle worst-case “what if” scenarios. • Overthinking: It keeps you stuck analyzing, to the point of non-decision or non-action. • Negative self-talk: It constantly makes you doubt yourself, your actions, and your abilities. The truth is, if you’ve experienced these, you’re normal. But it’s possible to live life without them. What Would Life Be Like Without These States? Imagine waking up without having to think about the problems of the day ahead. Instead, you’re present in your surroundings, thankful for what you have, and excited about what you’re going to experience—carrying an underlying buzz of joy. Life would be easier. You’d have clarity on your journey and what you want out of it. You’d have more energy for the things you enjoy, and your relationships would thrive. 4 Actions to Turn Your Mind into Your Greatest Ally 1. Be Present • Your mind can’t control you if you anchor yourself in the present. • Try this: Look around and name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, and 3 you touch. • Or simply breathe: Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4. Practice interrupting your thoughts daily. The key is to slow down habitual thinking, which keeps the ego alive. Ask yourself: Do I really need to be thinking right now? There’s a beautiful world around you to experience. 2. Create Space Between You and Your Thoughts • Don’t fight your thoughts—observe them. • Imagine them as passing clouds or write them down. Journaling for 5 minutes can release mental clutter. • Remember: You are not your thoughts. Don’t get upset when you experience weird ones. Journaling my negative thoughts has been one of the greatest therapeutic experiences of my life. 3. Break the Loop with Movement • An overactive mind thrives on stillness. Move to reset. • Take a 10-minute walk, stretch, or even dance. Movement clears your mind and anchors you to your body. The body and mind are connected. If you stay stagnant, so will your mind. Get moving to ignite your brain juices. 4. Simplify and Prioritize • Overthinking often comes from overwhelm. Simplify and slow down to silence it. • Write down ONE task to focus on today. Action creates clarity and quiets the noise in your mind. There’s a toxic mentality that doing more is productive, but the opposite is often true. That’s it, friends. I hope this was helpful. -Jono |
